RV and Boat Insurance Basics

thinksem-dev • Apr 17, 2014

Before you head out in the RV or the boat, you need to be sure you have the right insurance coverage for your recreational toy. Here are some basic types of insurance you should consider for each.

RV Insurance

RV insurance blends home and auto insurance coverage into one policy that protects the vehicle from collisions with other vehicles or objects, weather, vandalism, theft and other perils. In addition, it should cover your personal property inside the RV, and provide liability protection in case you cause injury or damage to someone else. It can be purchased as an add-on to your auto insurance policy, or as a separate RV insurance policy. What you should purchase depends on your RV, your needs, and the extent of your use. You will need several types of insurance for your RV, including:

  • Comprehensive and collision coverage. This works just like the comprehensive and collision coverage in your auto insurance policy.
  • Liability coverage protects you in the event that you cause injury or damage to someone else while operating your RV.
  • International travel coverage will cover you if you plan to drive your RV into Mexico or Canada.
  • Loss replacement coverage will help you replace your RV if it suffers a total loss.
  • Personal property insurance provides coverage for personal items inside your RV, such as clothing, kitchen items, tools, equipment, electronics and so on.
  • Attached accessories coverage reimburses you for damage to items like awnings or TV antennas that are not covered under the basic policy.
  • Emergency expenses coverage reimburses you for hotel or transportation costs after you’ve had an accident and cannot use your RV.

Part time RV users who only use their vehicle during certain months can suspend their collision and liability coverage when the RV is not in use. This can help them save money on their premiums. Full-timers need full-timers insurance, which includes coverage for personal belongings, comprehensive personal liability coverage, and additional living expenses coverage.

Boat Insurance

Boat owners will have varying needs for boat insurance, depending on the type of boat and where and how often they use it. But most boat insurance policies include at least these basic types of coverage:

  • Collision coverage, which reimburses you for the cost of repairing and replacing physical damage to your boat
  • Comprehensive coverage, which reimburses you if your boat is stolen, vandalized or damaged in some way due to an incident other than a collision
  • Property damage and bodily injury liability coverage, which covers you if you cause damage to someone else’s property or you cause injuries to someone else while operating your boat.

Boat owners should also consider uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, towing coverage, and coverage for fishing equipment, tools, life preservers and other personal property kept on the boat.
