Finding the Right Health Insurance for You

Recent changes to health insurance laws and regulations have promised to make it easier on those who need to find their own, private plans. While many wait for those promises to come true, the process can still be extremely frustrating.

There are some important factors to consider while choosing a private health insurance plan in Louisiana. Nearly everyone, besides those very few who qualify for exemptions, must carry health insurance due to changes enacted by the Affordable Care Act, or be subjected to a fine. It is recommended to carry health insurance, not only to avoid that fine, but because just one unexpected injury or illness can bankrupt the uninsured.

You may qualify for a tax break, or subsidy, for an eligible health insurance plan. This assistance can help pay for your health insurance premium, or be taken as an annual tax credit. Even if you do not qualify, you can still choose a private plan from the Louisiana marketplace. These plans are categorized as 1-star, 2-star, 3-star, 4-star or 5-star, with 5-star plans offering the most comprehensive coverage, which generally means higher premiums but lower deductibles.

The factors you need to consider include how many members of your household you need to insure; the types of medical care you routinely need (such as vision coverage); the premiums you can afford; the deductibles you can afford; and the out-of-pocket expenses you would pay with each plan.

It’s important to remember that the premium you pay for a health insurance plan isn’t the only financial consideration to be made. Some plans offer very low premiums, but the deductible, co-pays and other out-of-pocket expenses would cost you far more than a plan with a slightly higher premium but better coverage.

Many people looking for private health insurance plans in Louisiana prefer to work with an insurance agent who can help you determine these factors.
