Thanksgiving Celebration Safety Tips

thinksem-dev • Nov 24, 2014

Hosting family or friends for Thanksgiving can be stressful. It’s important to take your time in preparing your home and delicious holiday traditions so you are sure to follow proper safety guidelines and reduce the risk of injury or illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, clostridium perfringens is the second most common bacterial cause of food poisoning. Outbreaks occur most often in November and December and meat and poultry accounted for 92 percent of outbreaks with an identified single food source. Always use a food thermometer to guarantee that foods are cooked to a safe-to-eat temperature. Remember to refrigerate leftovers at 40°F or below as soon as possible and within two hours of preparation to prevent food poisoning.

It’s a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in the case of a turkey emergency. Teach all members of the household how to use it and ensure it is not expired. Also be sure that all smoke alarms in the home are in working condition with fresh batteries. While turkey fryers are a popular addition to this holiday tradition, they also pose a fire risk. Never attempt to deep-fry a frozen turkey, and always make sure the oil is below the device’s recommended fill line.

Wear snug fitting clothing while cooking. Long, loose apparel can snag on pots or catch on fire from a gas flame or hot stove. Never leave food on the stove or in the oven unattended. Always keep children away from the stove and any hot food or liquids, which can spill and cause injury. Although little ones enjoy helping, you should try to keep them otherwise occupied. You could assign them the task of making sure the entry to your home isn’t cluttered with shoes, bags and other items that can cause someone to trip and fall.

A yearly tradition you should start, and no time is better than the holidays, is an annual review of your home insurance policy. Knowledgeable, independent agents at McInnis Insurance can help identify any gaps in your current coverage, suggest ways in which you can save on your premium, and even assist you in finding a better policy. Contact a McInnis Insurance agent near you to find out more about a home insurance policy that can protect your home this Thanksgiving.
