4 Steps to Prepare for Floods

thinksem-dev • Apr 05, 2013

Floods can occur anywhere, at any time, but standard homeowners insurance policies don’t cover the high costs associated with flood damage. Therefore, it is important for you to be prepared. Here are four important steps you can take to prepare your home and your finances for rising waters:

Know Your Risks

With its low elevation and high risk of hurricanes and other extreme weather, Claiborne Parish has a high potential for flooding. One way to determine your individual home’s flood risk is by consulting a Flood Insurance Risk Map , developed by the federal government.

Flood maps don’t tell the whole story, however. Even if your property is outside of a flood zone, you still may be vulnerable to flooding. Check historical flood data for your community and consider other potential causes of flooding, both inside and outside of your home.

Secure Your Home

If your home is in a low-lying area, there are two ways to prevent flooding: raise the home above the base flood elevation and seal foundations, doors, and windows. These tactics, while effective, are time-consuming and costly, and may not be possible for all homeowners.

Sandbags offer an affordable alternative to protect your home from floodwaters. When stacked around your home, sandbags can help to seal foundations and doors, keeping water and debris away from your home. Sandbags are often available at no charge to homeowners in our communities during emergencies.

Plan an Escape Route

Sometimes the best course of action in a flood is to evacuate. Create an evacuation pack for your family with clothes, toiletries, and snacks. Keep important documents together so they can be located quickly and taken with you. Finally, identify a safe destination, whether a family member’s home or a favorite travel spot, and map out several routes in case the main road is blocked. Avoid driving in flood waters.

Protect Your Finances

Flood insurance helps to ensure that your financial resources are protected in a flood. Policies are available to communities that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program , with premiums starting at just $129 annually.

Our agents are available to answer any questions you have about flood insurance and help you find the coverage you need. Just call or visit any of our three Northern Louisiana offices.
